New franchises and old ones emerged in 2002, with some featuring as the best comedy movies that turned 20 in 2022. Some of these movies might not live up to their age, whereas others certainly hold a keen sense of nostalgia over some audience members.

8 Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams

There’s a distinct style in Robert Rodriguez’s fun level of camp and color. Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams is filled with a strange yet endearing level of charm, and comedy perfect for kids or those that enjoy a subtle homage to B-movie joy.

Now professional super spies, siblings Carmen and Juni Cortez are tasked with their next mission. They must retrieve the device known as the Transmooker. This dangerous device can disrupt all known electronic devices. The film sees the siblings set course for a mysterious island, with a set of rival spy kids.

7 Ice Age

As one of the earliest movies to experiment with computer animation outside of Disney, Ice Age is a marvel for its entertainment factor. There are plenty of jokes for kids and adults in Blue Sky Studios’ debut film. There’s a great trio bound to this unlikely movie, and Ice Age has a lot of joy for such a literally cold premise.

The story of Ice Age follows three animal characters. Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth, and Diego the sabretooth tiger. These characters become an unlikely pairing, as they team up against the harsh wild to return a human baby to his family.

6 Catch Me If You Can

Despite being more of a crime drama, Catch Me If You Can has a fair share of comedic moments. It’s a highly praised film and for good reason. Director Steven Spielberg and actors Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio are a golden ticket unto themselves. Catch Me If You Can is a true story, which makes some of the events even better.

As con artist Frank Abagnale continues his path of duping people out of millions of dollars, he soon finds himself under the pursuit of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, who is tasked with putting an end to Frank’s dubious and masterful schemes of deception.

5 Men In Black 2

Continuing from the first film, Men in Black 2 features plenty of interesting character work, with fun aliens, cameos, and comedic moments. Although it’s a sequel not as beloved as the original, Men in Black 2 still works as a fun movie and a fairly decent comedy from 2002.

After discovering the looming threat of a powerful shapeshifting alien, and the mysterious Light of Zartha, Agent J deduces that the best line of defense for Earth is the reintroduction of Agent K, his former partner. The duo must team up to stop this extra-terrestrial threat against Earth, with the roles reversed for this sequel.

4 Scooby-Doo

Perhaps the most famous cast of characters in Hanna-Barbera cartoon history takes a leap into live-action for this 2002 movie. Scooby-Doo has lived on in internet fame as a great adaption, with an abundance of comedy, action, goofs, and thrills.

The plot of Scooby-Doo follows on from the cartoons, with Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo all on their separate ventures. However, after a mysterious invitation to the resort of Spooky Island, Mystery Inc. once again find themselves together again.

3 Lilo & Stitch

Early Disney animated features had an irresistible charm and message about them. Lilo & Stitch was certainly one of them, and potentially one of the bests. It’s a touching story, with great music, great animation, and a fun cast of characters. The setting of Lilo & Stitch is certain to warm hearts.

The story itself follows an extra-terrestrial experiment, who escapes his cell to head straight to planet Earth. The blue creature soon named Stitch, finds himself imitating a dog, and rather poorly at it. His friendship with Lilo soon blossoms and their mutual love of food and Elvis takes hold.

2 Jackass: The Movie

The often-grotesque crew of comedic documentary filmmakers returns for their first feature-length film. Jackass: The Movie features the same cringe-inducing, bone-crushing stunts, and performances from the MTV show, but with a higher budget, and with worsened injuries.

People adore Jackass: The Movie, for the ridiculousness of the cast, and what hilarious antics and stunts they will put themselves through to commit to gross-out gags and death-defying stunts. The stunts can be as silly as rampaging through Tokyo, or as life-threatening as toying with bulls.

1 Austin Powers In Gold Member

One of Mike Myers’ most famous characters returns to conclude a trilogy with Austin Powers in Goldmember. This 2002 flick saw the combined efforts of Mike Myers and Beyonce, along with some hilarious A-list stars to celebrate this wacky, camp, and ever-groovy spy.

The plot for Austin Powers in Gold Member is far out. Literally. Austin Powers chases Dr. Evil through time after the kidnapping of his father. The film follows Austin Powers and his newest action hero, Foxxy Cleopatra, as they seek to stop Goldmember, Mini-Me, and Dr. Evil, once and for all.
