RELATED: Best Turn-Based RPGs On The Nintendo Switch
Labyrinth Legend is a simple-to-understand action RPG dungeon crawler. Players will create a character, class, and then head into various dungeons all while looking for treasure. Reviews for it have been moderate so far, hovering around the 70s on most aggregates. It may not be the biggest game of 2022, but Labyrinth Legend may match a particular gamer’s interests. Let’s find out why in this deep dive through the game’s many achievements and downfalls.
8 Best: Loot Till You Drop
The gameplay loop in Labyrinth Legend is almost as addictive as Diablo’s. Players jump into a dungeon, fight through several floors of monsters, collect their loot, fight a boss, and then repeat.
Playing levels repeatedly to grind for levels and gear can be fun especially if players are trying to master multiple classes. It’s nothing extraordinary for the looter RPG genre, but it is a satisfying formula. The upgrades are decent enough too.
7 Worst: Inventory Space
The downside to many looter RPGs, including Diablo, is the inventory space. Torchlight seemingly figured out this issue by adding in pets. They could act like stockpiles or even disappear for a bit to sell off goods while in a dungeon. Labyrinth Legend doesn’t have that feature.
The stash chest in town even has limited space. There are ways to increase personal and trunk inventory space but it feels odd to waste gold on both. There is always the strategy of selling stuff but even that is complicated.
6 Best: Co-Op And Monster Partners
One of the best parts about looter RPGs like Diablo is playing with friends. Labyrinth Legend doesn’t have a huge multiplayer feature, but it does support local couch co-op. That is more than enough.

The game is not particularly challenging even on the highest difficulty setting. All players need to do is grind. Still, having a buddy close by can make any gaming experience better. If players can’t get a buddy then there are monster partners to recruit on a separate island. They can boost stats and make the world of difference.
5 Worst: Poor Character Customization
Creating a character and putting oneself into a game can be quite engaging. Unfortunately, Labyrinth Legend doesn’t have a lot of character customization options. Players can choose to play as one of five premade avatars and that is it. Hair color can’t even be changed.
This isn’t a huge issue since the game doesn’t feature a story for players to see their characters interact in. Still, it’s always nice to see robust customization options in action RPGs like this, and having it be missing is disappointing.
4 Best: Weapon Variety
There are a lot of weapons to choose from in the game. The standard swords and spears litter the world but then there are also more exotic weapons to find in loot drops. There are whips and boomerangs for example.
Players can also find spells and use them even if they didn’t choose the Wizard class. Every weapon has an attached skill that can be purchased too. Labyrinth Legend gives players a lot of options for slaying enemies and that’s a great thing for an action RPG.
3 Worst: Classes Aren’t Different Enough
There are three classes in Labyrinth Legend players can choose from are Strider, Wizard, and Nightcrawler. Strider is like the warrior of the group. The Wizard is exactly what it sounds like, and the Nightcrawler serves as the game’s equivalent of a rogue.

Each class gets one special, exclusive ability, but that about covers it. Armor, weapons, and spells are not just held back by character classes or levels. This makes the three classes feel too similar. It would have been nice if the differences were more varied. This could have created more dynamic multiplayer parties.
2 Best: No Death Penalties And Flexible Difficulty
Labyrinth Legend may look like a roguelike but it is far from it. For example, the dungeons are randomly generated. However, if players die in a dungeon there is no penalty. Items, gold, and experience will not be left behind.
Even though it might be frustrating to die repeatedly in a dungeon, at least there are rewards. The more players attempt something, the stronger they will become. There are difficulties players can adjust in the game as well, but RPGs like this naturally do a good job of balancing experiences.
1 Worst: The Art Style
Labyrinth Legend looks like it was made using a game maker engine. There have been some good standalone RPGs to come out of game maker tools but Labyrinth Legend is not one of them. Its aesthetic makes the game look generic. The animations are also rough.
Characters and enemies have no life to them. Even the bosses, which should be scary in any game, don’t strike fear as they should due to stiff movements. It’s not the worst-looking RPG on the Switch, but it’s far from the prettiest.
Labyrinth Legend was released on January 18, 2022 for the Switch. It’s also available on PC.
